Bishop administers Sacraments to prison inmates

Bishop Edgar M. da Cunha, S.D.V., administered the Sacraments of Initiation to five inmates at the Barnstable County Correctional Facility in Buzzards Bay during a Liturgy on August 22, 2017. Solar eclipse viewing at Chancery offices

Blessed Mother statue dedicated at Chancery

Bishop Edgar M. da Cunha, S.D.V., blessed and dedicated a newly-installed statue of Our Blessed Mother that now adorns the entrance to the Chancery office building on Highland Avenue in Fall River on May 30. The statue, which previously belonged to the former SS. Peter and Paul Parish at Holy Cross Church in the city and had been a longtime fixture within the courtyard entrance to SS. Peter and Paul Church and School, will now greet all who come to the diocesan offices. The bishop asked the Blessed Mother to keep watch over the diocese and all who work for it.    [Photos by Kenneth J. Souza]

Bishop attends Santo Christo Feast in Azores

Bishop Edgar M. da Cunha, S.D.V., recently visited St. Michael’s in the Azores for its annual Santo Christo Feast. Bishop da Cunha was an honored guest at the feast, which is the biggest religious festival in the Azores Islands, traditionally held on the fifth Sunday after Easter. The Festas do Senhor Santo Cristo dos Milagres (Lord Holy Christ of the Miracles) dates back to the end of the 17th century. [Photos by Deacon Alan Thadeu]

Fatima’s centennial celebration in New Bedford

On the eve of the 100th anniversary of the apparitions of Our Lady of Fatima, diocesan faithful gathered in New Bedford at the Madeira Field — the annual site of the Feast of the Blessed Sacrament — for a special outdoor Mass celebration and candlelight procession. Hundreds of people, many of them parishioners from Immaculate Conception and Our Lady of Mount Carmel parishes in New Bedford, attended the Liturgy and listened to Father José Eduardo Medeiros, a visiting priest from Winnipeg, Canada, preach on the lasting legacy of the Fatima apparitions.  [Photos by Kenneth J. Say Yes to Mary: Fatima’s 100th Anniversary

Hundreds of faithful from across the Fall River Diocese attended the “Say Yes to Mary: Fatima’s 100th Anniversary” celebration on Saturday morning, May 6 at Bishop Connolly High School in Fall River. The event included dramatic performances, discussions, Rosary-making workshops, and Marian vendors. It concluded with a Living Rosary in the gym, followed by Benediction and Adoration in the auditorium. Presented by Living the Fatima Message and Bishop Connolly High School, the program officially kicked off a series of celebrations to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Our Lady’s apparitions in Fatima, Portugal in 1917.  [Photos by Kenneth J. Eighth Grade Tour and Mass at Cathedral

Students in grade eight from all the Catholic schools in the Fall River Diocese attended the annual Eighth Grade Mass and Tour of the Cathedral of St. Mary of the Assumption in Fall River on Monday, May 8, 2017. The event included a trivia-driven scavenger hunt in which the students had to find and identify certain items within the diocese’s Mother Church. They also visited the lower level crypt where former diocesan bishops are interred, took class photos, enjoyed lunch on the lawn outside the cathedral, and celebrated Mass with Bishop Edgar M. da Cunha, S.D.V.  [Photos by Kenneth J. Bishop Edgar M. da Cunha, S.D.V., D.D., celebrated a Mass of Chrism at the Cathedral of St. Mary of the Assumption in Fall River on Tuesday of Holy Week, April 11, 2017 at 4 p.m. with his brother priests. Among those in attendance were Bishop Emeritus George W. Coleman and priests celebrating significant anniversaries of ordination this year: Father John P. Driscoll (70 years); Father Arthur K. Wingate (60 years); Father Henry S. Arruda, Father Richard L. Chretien, Father Brian J. Harrington, Father James H. Morse, and Msgr. John J. Oliveira (50 years); Father Gerald P. Barnwell, Father Raymond Cambra, Father Dennis J. Loomis, M.S., Father John J. Oliveira, Father Robert A. Oliveira, Father John C. Ozug, Father John A. 2017 Diocesan Women and Men’s Conference

More than 800 faithful from across the Fall River Diocese attended the first-ever diocesan sponsored Women and Men’s Conference at Stonehill College in Easton on March 11, 2017. Themed “Thirsting for Hope: Can You Drink the Cup I Drink?,” the event was an opportunity for people to prepare together for the Lenten season. Bill Sylvia 5K Road Race

The first annual Bill Sylvia 5K Road Race to Benefit Catholic Media was held in West Wareham on Saturday, May 14, 2016, beginning and ending at St. Anthony’s Chapel on Gault Road. First-place overall and top male finisher was Paul Lapre (#189) of Middleboro and top female finisher was Cheryl Healy (#191) of Fairhaven. Race namesake Bill Sylvia (#180) also walked the course — his first event in nearly two years. Portions of the proceeds from the race benefitted The Anchor and Life With Christ Radio, a proposed Catholic radio station on Cape Cod. For complete race results, visit www.jbrace.com.
