NEW BEDFORD, Mass. — Celina Rita Oliveira, 65, of New Bedford passed away January 5 at St. Luke’s Hospital surrounded by her loving family.
Born in New Bedford, she was the daughter of Celina (Cordeiro) Oliveira and the late John J. Oliveira. She graduated from Holy Family High School and went on to receive her bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Bridgewater State College. She became a fourth-grade teacher in the New Bedford public schools where she taught for more than 30 years at the Ellen R. Hathaway School until her retirement.
Celina was an avid reader, Scrabble player and jumble word player. She also enjoyed long car rides. She was passionate about education and loved watching sports on TV, especially the New England Patriots and the Boston Red Sox. Celina had a wonderful sense of humor and a heart-warming smile. She was loved by everyone who met her.
Her greatest joy was being with her family and loved being “titia” to her eight nephews and many grand- nieces and nephews.
Celina was predeceased by her twin sister, M. Gloria Lima and is survived by her mother, Celina; her sister, Terry Gaffney and her husband, Jim of Dartmouth; her two brothers, Msgr. John J. Oliveira, PA, pastor of St. Mary’s Parish, New Bedford, and Dr. Lawrence Oliveira and his wife, Charlotte of Mattapoisett.
The family would like to give special thanks to her caregivers, Rebecca, Irene and Judy for their excellent care during her long battle with Machado/Joseph’s disease.
Her funeral Mass was celebrated at St. Mary’s Church, New Bedford on January 10. Interment was at St. John’s Cemetery.
