NEW BEDFORD, Mass. — Scores of faithful Catholics will be accompanying the most precious Blessed Sacrament through the streets of New Bedford Sunday, the feast of Corpus Christi.
Two annual processions will begin at separate locations, bringing the Body of Christ through the center of the Whaling City in a powerful display glorifying the Body of the Savior present in the monstrance, accompanied by faithful with banners, flowers, prayer and song.
Beginning at 2 p.m. at St. Anthony of Padua Church, 1359 Acushnet Avenue, the procession initiates with Benediction.
Then the procession will begin through area streets led by the St. Anthony Band.
Imploring area faithful to take part, Father Edward A. Murphy, pastor of St. Anthony’s Parish asked, “Won’t you take a moment to walk with Jesus? Join us as we bring Jesus into the streets of New Bedford.”
Also at 2 p.m. on Sunday, an annual Corpus Christi procession will begin at Our Lady’s Chapel, 600 Pleasant Street. Here, too, the monstrance containing the precious Body of Christ, will be accompanied by faithful in a visual example of love, respect and gratitude to Christ for His supreme sacrifice for the Salvation of all.
The procession will make stops at Our Lady of Purgatory Church, 11 Franklin Street; St. Lawrence Martyr Church and the Missionaries of Charity Convent, 565-566 County Street; returning to Our Lady’s Chapel, where a reception will follow the procession.
All are invited and encouraged to join the processions and give witness to a profound faith in the Risen Christ.
